Ukraine have one of the most impressive records in the last ten years of the contest, taking home their first victory just a year after their Eurovision debut, and qualifying for the finals every year subsequently. Last year was a rare disappointment when Gaitana finished a lowly 15th – their worst placing since Greenjolly in 2005, but nevertheless they’re a nation that can never be discounted.

26 year old Zlata Ognevich was crowned their 2013 representative this morning, with the Disneyfied power ballad ‘Gravity’.

For me there’s just a little bit too much going on in this song – it starts well but seems to lose musical focus. The backing vocals are distinctive but could do with being toned down a bit. However, there’s no arguing with the power behind her voice, and the Ukraine are known for tweaking their entries considerably between selection and participation. I expect a more competitive version of this performance in Malmö, and if everything comes together this might be a contender. Definitely one of the strongest entries so far.
