First Listen Review attempts to capture my first impressions of the year’s Eurovision entries as and when they’re released. My opinion is liable to change as certain songs grow on me or get revamped, but based on the principle that most listeners will only hear each entry once (or twice) before voting, hopefully it’ll provide some insight.

Monika Kuszynska first came to fame as the lead singer of popular Polish pop-rock group Varius Manx. She released a solo album ‘Ocalona’ in 2012.

Poland made a memorable splash last year with their busty milkmaids routine, but the tongue-in-cheek act proved divisive to Eurovision juries – particularly in the UK, where they were controversially blocked from receiving any points despite topping the British televote.

Perhaps aiming for a less polarised reaction this year, Monika Kuszyńska’s In The Name Of Love is a stately, orchestral ballad that sounds about as far removed from My Slowanie as one could imagine. It’s the kind of thing that tends to be catnip to the jurors, and many fans are drawing favourable comparisons with Poland’s first and most-successful Eurovision effort to date, To nie ja! by Edyta Gorniak.

With so many countries pinning their hopes on the classic Euroballad this year, it’s inevitable that some are going to get lost in the mix. Poland’s overall qualification rate is pretty low, so they’re going to rely on a strong and compelling performance to distinguish themselves here. That’s where Kuszyńska may be their secret weapon. Not only is she a beautiful woman with a rich and appealing voice, she also arrives with a ready-made narrative – since a serious accident in 2006, she has been paralysed from the waist down.

It would be crass to suggest that Poland will get through on sheer sympathy, and even moreso to expect them to overtly play on Kuszyńska’s condition , but there’s no ignoring the fact that voters are likely to pick up on it. The song is a standard love ballad, but it has a soaring, inspirational feel that should lend itself well to a performance that tells a story. All Poland have to do is deliver that performance and they should do well.

If it feels like this review says little about the song, that’s because there really isn’t a great deal to say about it. It’s a very well sung, well put-together Eurovision ballad of a kind we’ve heard many times before. Under most circumstances I’d have it down as solidly borderline to qualify – the kind of song that could land anywhere between 7th-13th in the semi, but as a whole package I’d be surprised to see this outside the finals.
